We previously teased that exciting things were coming in 2026, and we weren’t joking. It's a year of big innovation for Donna Bella, starting with an update to our shade names. We wanted to make things easier for stylists and clients alike to color match with ease. This calls for the use of Universal Color Theory. You’ve likely been taught the method in cosmetology school to better understand how to create the ideal hair color for your clients. We’re using the same principles of Color Theory and applying them to our shade names. This way, you don’tneed to learn a new color method and can use the one you’re already familiar with.
Below, we walk through what Color Theory is, why we updated our shade names, and share what the pros are saying about this upgrade. Plus, we walk you through our updated packaging and more.
What Is Color Theory?
For those who aren’t familiar or are still learning, Color Theory focuses on the three principles of color: hue, level, and intensity. Hue is the color itself, level is the lightness or darkness, and intensity is the brightness or dullness. Understanding these principles gives you the know-how to create a new shade for your clients based on what you’re already working with.
Color Theory also utilizes the color wheel as a tool to understand shade creation and how to color-correct your client’s hair. This can look like toning brassiness, lightening, or darkening someone’s hair. When you understand Color Theory and the color wheel, you can master this craft.
Why We Updated Our Shade Names
Color Theory is an integral part of the salon process. There isn’t a client that goes by without a stylist having to utilize this info, especially when it comes to coloring and extensions. This is exactly why we’ve updated our shade names to align with Color Theory. We aim to boost your confidence with color matching to leave clients satisfied every single time because clearer shade names mean easier matching. The same pro quality hair you trust, now with a smarter way to find your perfect match.

New Shade Names, Same Pro Quality
Our new naming system is built on stylist clarity for more consistent, reliable results. Keep in mind that our quality isn’t changing, just our shade names. You can still expect the same high-quality extensions you know and love from Donna Bella.
Here is a sneak peek at some of the updated names:
- #1 Jet Black becomes #1N Natural Black
- #12/600 Light Ash/Blonde becomes #7N/9N Blonde Blend
- #60 Platinum Ash Blonde becomes #10N Lightest Blonde
- #6C Medium Copper Red becomes #6C Natural Copper
You can find a full list of our shade name updates here.

What About Your Color Ring?
Chances are, you have a Donna Bella Color Ring on hand. If so, don’t throw it out just yet. Because the shades are the same and the names are the only thing that’s updating, we came up with a simple solution: a sticker sheet. This free sticker sheet contains the old and new shade names so you can place them right over the names on your DB Color Ring.
Get your free sticker sheet here. And if you don’t already have a Color Ring (an essential for consultations), get one here.

Packaging Gets an Upgrade
On top of our updated shade names, packaging is getting a little upgrade too. We polished it up a bit, giving each method its own unique DB shade. Now packaged in stand-up boxes, they’ll look great sitting atop your station.
Another Launch Coming Soon
This isn’t the only innovation you can expect from Donna Bella. We have an upcoming launch to share soon, one that involves a major distributor. Keep your eyes peeled for hints on our social media. And don’t forget to sign up for our newsletter as well to be in the know before anyone else.
