How many hair extensions you need for a full head depends on several factors, but generally you can count on 4 to 10 packs of hair for I-Link and Kera-Link or 3 to 7 packs for Tape-In. (I-Link and Kera-Link packs come with 20 strands per pack; Tape-In packs include 10 wefts per pack. Wefts contain more hair than strands.) When deciding on how many extensions to order for yourself or for your client, you need to take into account the current length and thickness of the natural hair, as well as the desired length. With too few extension pieces, the finished product won’t look natural.
Here’s a quick and easy guide:
Fine | Medium | Thick | |
Strand-by-Strand |
4-7 packs | 5-8 packs | 8-10 packs |
Weft |
3-5 packs | 4-6 packs | 5-7 packs |
These are very rough estimates based specifically on Donna Bella’s hair extensions. Of course, every head of hair is different, so packs needed will vary.
Remember that, unless you're adding extensions strictly for volume or a pop of color, you'll need enough hair extensions to make the base thickness (or the thickness at the ends of the hair) match the thickness at the roots. If you add too much, you'll get a poodle effect, plus too much strain on the roots of the hair. If you add too little, you'll get a mullet--or worse: raggedy strands peeking out from beneath the natural hair.
As you become more experienced at working with extensions, you will develop an eye for estimating how many hair extensions are necessary for a full head.
